When storing wines especially more expensive vintage wines it is generally prudent to store it in a location that does not get too much bright light and keep it at relatively cool temperatures. Wine coolers, not to be confused with the alcoholic beverage also called wine coolers, is one way many individuals keep their collections at the optimal storage temperature. Wine coolers will often vary in size ranging from small insulated buckets that temporally cools the wine while being served, to specialized medium and large sized refrigerator style can cool wines to the optimal storage temperatures in lieu of having a real temperature controlled wine room or wine cellar.
Ideally most wine should be stored at a temperature range of roughly 45-64 degrees Fahrenheit (7-18 degrees Celsius) with minimal or gradual variations in temperature where possible. These temperatures are similar to the temperatures of many caves in Europe where they were previously stored before sophisticated refrigeration and air conditioning technology existed. Also when storing wine it should be in locations well away from any sources of light, vibrations, or humidity all of which a can also cause wines of all vintages to spoil or significantly lose flavor.
Smaller, single bottle wine coolers are designed to either actively or passively chill a bottle while being served–this is particularly important for certain wines such as white wine that usually needs to be served chilled. Of course these single bottle units are intended for temporary cooling. For longer term storage, larger units are available that act as small wine cellars and usually feature temperature controls that allow the user to set their desired temperature and in more advanced units the desired humidity levels.
